Professor Nestor Mendez

Regional Co-Director for GFTeam BJJ AZ  Association | Lead Jiu-Jitsu Instructor at Baker’s MMA & Fitness

Professor Nestor Mendez is a 3rd-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Professor Marcelo Carvalho (5th-degree black belt) and Master Júlio César Pereira (8th-degree coral belt), proudly representing the Oswaldo Fadda lineage through GFTeam.

Professor Mendez began his martial arts journey in 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada, training MMA under Coach Tony “The Freak” Fryklund of the legendary Miletich Fighting Systems (MFS), while studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Professor Amilcar “Mica” Cipili of Gracie Humaitá LV.

In 2007, he returned to New Mexico, where he continued training under his childhood friend Greg Jackson of Jackson’s MMA / Jackson Submission Fighting. The following year, he advanced his Jiu-Jitsu journey at Albuquerque Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & MMA under Professor William Kevin Carpenter (Pedro Carvalho black belt), earning his blue through brown belts, competing successfully in SW Grapplefest and Combat Sports Club, and serving as a referee for five years.

After relocating to Phoenix, Arizona in 2014, Professor Mendez helped build and expand Jiu-Jitsu programs at Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu Club and Master Camacho’s Martial Arts Institute, while also formally studying Catch-As-Catch-Can Wrestling at Snake Pit USA under Coach John Potenza. That same year, he was appointed Assistant Director of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the American Taekwondo Association.

In November 2014, Professor Mendez earned his black belt, marking a major milestone in nearly a decade of relentless dedication to the art. Today, he serves as the Lead Jiu-Jitsu Instructor at Baker’s MMA & Fitness LLC and Regional Co-Director for GFTeam Arizona (GFTAZ) — mentoring students and affiliate academies across the Phoenix Valley.

Professor Mendez continues to embody the values of discipline, technical excellence, and community — fostering the next generation of martial artists through the GFTeam philosophy of loyalty, family, and evolution.Professor Nestor is a Brazilian JiuJitsu Black Belt 3rd Degree, Father, Leader, and a fellow Teacher, like Glen in Martial Arts.
